Sleep is important, we know that we feel better after a good nights rest, but sometimes it can be hard to really hard to doze off into the land of nod - here’s 5 ways you can help yourself get a better sleep.
No screen time 30 minutes before bed
This one is the hardest of them all to be completely honest, who doesn’t love a cheeky scroll before bed? But the light from your device stimulates the brain keeps us from falling asleep with ease. How do I stop you say? …try turning on the automatic do not disturb on your phone or put your phone in another room. You’ll get a better sleep and we all know there’s nothing you would have missed on instagram so save it for the morning.
Do some gentle yoga
It doesn’t have to be a whole class, but a few gentle stretches to relax the muscles will help your body settle and prepare you for sleep. Here are a few of our favourite pre bed poses (hold each shape for 1-2 minutes)
pigeon - Kapotasana
reclined butterfly - Supta Baddha Konasana
legs up the wall - Viparita Karani
child’s pose - Balasana
Seated forward fold - Paschimottanasana
Savasana (put a pillow under the knees for extra coziness
drink herbal tea or a hot toddy
A good chamomile or sleepy tea is perfect to make you feel warm and relaxed. Some of our favourite are the classic T2 sleepy time tea or the Organic Merchant restful tea. If herbal tea isn’t your thing try a hot toddy (a winter favourite)
Hot Toddy recipe
Boiling water
a shot of whiskey
a squeeze of lemon
squeeze of honey
a cinnamon stick
and 3 cloves
read a book
There is sure to be a book or two lying around that’s half read you can finish, snuggle up in bed and read a few pages.
try yoga nidra for sleep
This is something that i’ve recommended to many students, friends and family who struggle falling asleep - the best one in my opinion is the Yoga Nidra for sleep podcast by mindful in minutes. Everyone who has tried it has loved it.
